PORT DICKSON, Mar 6, 2020 - The newly-launched Tuanku Muhriz Power Station at Jimah has the capacity to generate 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enabling Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to generate 25,981 MW of electricity in peninsular Malaysia.

The RM12 billion power station, covering approximately 104 hectares and formerly known as Jimah East Power, is 70 per cent-owned by TNB, with Japanese companies Mitsui and Co Ltd and Chugoku Electric Power each holding a 15 per cent stake.

The plant, which has been fully operational since Dec 27 last year, was launched by Negeri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Almarhum Tuanku Munawir here. Also present were Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Aminuddin Harun, State Secretary Dato’ Dr. Razali Ab Malik and TNB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie.

The station is TNB’s third coal-fired plant to use ultra-super critical (USC) technology, which contributes to the national grid system’s stability. The other two are Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station in Lumut, Perak. The first unit of this station (Tuanku Muhriz Power Station) started operations on Aug 22 last year. The use of USC technology, which enables these stations to become among the region’s most efficient coal-fired power plants, involves coal burning technology that achieves 40 per cent efficiency compared to the 36 per cent of conventional coal-fired power plants.

The station has its own coal loading jetty that can accommodate large-sized Capesize bulk carriers. The 200,000 dwt (dead weight tonnage) Aveanna carrying 165,950 metric tons of coal from Indonesia was the first ship to dock at the jetty.

The project not only attracted investors and boosted economic activity but also created employment opportunities for the locals.
